Daniel Costie is an Associate Researcher at Spark. While conducting research for the organization, he is also pursuing his PhD from the University of Colorado Denver. Daniel’s dissertation seeks to understand the political discourse around hydraulic fracturing in Colorado and New York and how it shapes coalition activity. From developing the skills necessary to conduct rigorous research towards a graduate degree, Daniel brings to Spark understanding of social media and social network analysis.

Daniel’s background is in community empowerment, urban development, and food security. From 2007 to 2009, Daniel served in the United States Peace Corps working as a community development volunteer. Shortly after, he received a Master of Arts in International Development from the School of International Service at American University. For his capstone research, Daniel conducted a study comparing the urban agriculture movements of Havana, Cuba and Detroit, Michigan. More specifically, Daniel examined how community participation and social capital shaped urban development in those cities.

Outside of Spark, Daniel volunteers at a local non-profit that assists those experiencing homelessness find shelter and community. He enjoys pub quiz, terrible horror movies, and spending time with his beautiful wife and cantankerous dog.
